Sejak sekolah dasar, barangkali kata kesimpulan sudah sering kita gunakan. Ketika berkuliah atau bekerja, kesimpulan juga digunakan untuk mengakhiri makalah atau menyatakan kesepakatan rapat. Namun, apakah Kerabat Nara pernah menggunakan kata simpulan?
Kalau kita berselancar pada KBBI V, pada lema kesimpulan terdapat makna simpulan. Dalam lema simpulan pun ada arti kesimpulan. Kedua kata tersebut, simpulan dan kesimpulan, memiliki arti yang serupa. Simpulan berarti ‘sesuatu yang disimpulkan atau diikatkan’ dan ‘hasil menyimpulkan; kesimpulan’. Sementara itu, kesimpulan adalah ‘simpulan (dari uraian, pidato, dan sebagainya); kesudahan pendapat (pendapat terakhir yang berdasarkan pada uraian sebelumnya’ dan ‘keputusan yang diperoleh berdasarkan metode berpikir induktif atau deduktif’.
Apakah kita bisa bilang bahwa simpulan dan kesimpulan saling bersinonim? Sepertinya tidak selalu. Jika merujuk pada makna dari dua lema tersebut, ada sedikit perbedaan yang terlihat. Kata simpulan dekat sekali dengan kata simpul, yakni ‘ikatan pada tali atau benang’. Makna pertama simpulan adalah ‘sesuatu yang disimpulkan atau diikatkan’. Dengan demikian, kita bisa menggunakan kata ini dalam frasa simpulan pada tali sepatu. Namun, kesimpulan pada tali sepatu tentunya terdengar janggal.
Kata kesimpulan justru sering sekali kita gunakan dalam ragam formal, baik pada tulisan maupun lisan. Dalam lema ini, terdapat makna ‘keputusan yang diperoleh berdasarkan metode berpikir induktif atau deduktif’. Mungkin, karena itulah frasa kesimpulan pada tali sepatu terasa aneh. Ketika mempelajari cara-cara mengikat tali sepatu, saya rasa kita tidak berpikir apa itu metode induktif dan deduktif. Lagi-lagi, ini masalah kebiasaan.
Seperti yang saya tuliskan sebelumnya, simpulan dan kesimpulan bisa saja tidak selalu bersinonim. Maknanya memang mirip, tetapi penggunaannya tidak. Kendati dalam simpulan ada arti kesimpulan dan dalam kesimpulan ada makna simpulan, kebiasaan sejak dini sudah mendidik kita untuk menggunakan kedua kata tersebut pada konteks yang berbeda.
