Keresahan itu membuatnya kembali melirik profesi sebagai penulis. Ketika itu, tolok ukur keberhasilan seorang cerpenis adalah pemuatan karyanya di Kompas. Pada 1999, Puthut dapat menggapai pencapaian itu. Setelah cerita pendeknya dua kali dimuat di Kompas, media massa lain pun mengundangnya untuk menulis. Jalan terang sebagai penulis terbuka lebar baginya.
Sebenarnya, Puthut sudah rajin menulis ketika di SMP dan SMA. Ketika itu, geguritan dan cerita cekak (cerkak)—jenis puisi dan cerpen dalam bahasa Jawa—karyanya kerap dimuat di majalah Jaya Baya dan Panjebar Semangat. Kepindahan ke Yogyakarta untuk berkuliah membuatnya rehat menulis.
Selain menulis fiksi berupa cerpen, puisi, prosa lirik, novel, dan naskah drama, Puthut juga menulis nonfiksi berupa karya ilmiah dan esai. Penulisan ilmiah ditekuninya sejak sekitar 2003 dengan keaktifannya di Akademi Kebudayaan Yogyakarta dan beberapa komunitas atau lembaga swadaya masyarakat lain setelah itu. Ia menyalurkan perhatiannya terhadap isu sosial, politik, dan budaya melalui penelitian dan publikasi ilmiah itu.
Produksi karya esai Puthut makin lancar setelah ia mendirikan Mojok.co pada 2014. Ratusan esai yang pernah ditulisnya dibukukan, antara lain, dalam Makelar Politik: Kumpulan Bola Liar (2009), Mengantar dari Luar (2014), dan Enaknya Berdebat dengan Orang Goblok (2018). Salah satu kekhasan yang tampak dari esai-esai Puthut ialah narasi dan deskripsi yang mengalir, yang tampaknya muncul dari kepiawaiannya dalam menulis fiksi.
Di antara beragam genre tulisan yang pernah dibuatnya, naskah drama merupakan jenis karya yang paling menantang. Naskah drama memiliki batasan berupa kepentingan dari sutradara dan pemimpin produksi yang perlu diakomodasi. Untuk dapat menulis, menurut Puthut, seseorang harus gemar membaca. Tontonan dan obrolan bisa saja menjadi sumber ide, tetapi seorang penulis perlu mendapat referensi dari tulisan lain. Penyusunan alur tulisan dan pembangunan karakter (dalam fiksi) merupakan dua contoh hal yang tidak bisa dipelajari dari rujukan lisan.
“Keterampilan menulis sangat penting dalam hidup, sama pentingnya dengan keterampilan memasak,” kata Puthut untuk menutup gelar wicara. Menulis melatih manusia untuk menstrukturkan pikirannya. Pikiran yang terstruktur merupakan sesuatu yang harus dimiliki oleh semua orang, bukan hanya mereka yang berprofesi sebagai penulis.
