Pamusuk Eneste berpengalaman sebagai editor di Kelompok Kompas Gramedia selama 28 tahun (1982–2010). Ilmunya itu kemudian dituangkan menjadi bahan mata kuliah penyuntingan yang diampunya di Politeknik Negeri Jakarta sejak 1992. Bahan itulah yang kemudian dikembangkan menjadi Buku Pintar Penyuntingan Naskah (BPPN) melalui Penerbit Obor pada 1995. Edisi berikutnya dari buku itu diterbitkan Gramedia Pustaka Utama pada 2005 (edisi kedua) dan 2017 (edisi ketiga).
Edisi ketiga BPPN diperkaya dengan latihan. Keberadaan latihan itu menegaskan niat penulis untuk menjadikan buku ini sebagai bahan rujukan di ruang kelas, khususnya pada mata kuliah Penyuntingan. Selain itu, isi buku ini juga dapat dipakai untuk belajar secara mandiri. Banyak pengetahuan tentang dunia penyuntingan yang saya peroleh dengan mempelajari isi buku ini secara mandiri.
Sepuluh bab yang ada pada buku ini secara umum dapat dibagi menjadi tiga bagian besar. Bagian pertama (Bab 1–4) memberi pengantar mengenai dunia penyuntingan, bagian kedua (Bab 5–7) mengupas tahap penyuntingan, sedangkan bagian ketiga (Bab 8–10) menguraikan bahan-bahan pengayaan pengetahuan penyunting. Yang menarik, tiap bab diawali dengan subbab “Pendahuluan”, kecuali bab pertama yang judulnya sudah “Pendahuluan”.
Pengantar pada bagian pertama diawali dengan gambaran dunia penyuntingan di Indonesia serta dilanjutkan dengan pembahasan istilah penyuntingan, syarat penyunting, dan kode etik penyuntingan. Penjelasan tentang istilah penyuntingan (Bab 2) dibagi menjadi tiga komponen, yaitu objek (naskah), proses (penyuntingan), dan pelaksana (penyunting dan editor). Syarat penyunting (Bab 3) dijabarkan menjadi dua belas butir yang dapat dibagi menjadi tiga: umum (pengetahuan luas dan penguasaan bidang tertentu), bahasa (ejaan, tata bahasa, sahabat kamus, kepekaan bahasa, bahasa asing, dan menulis), dan nonteknis (ketelitian dan kesabaran, kepekaan isu sensitif, keluwesan, serta kode etik). Kode etik (Bab 4) mencakup enam butir yang menjadi pedoman bagi penyuntingan berdasarkan pengalaman penulis dan rujukan lain.
Bagian kedua membawa pembaca masuk pada tiga tahap penyuntingan: prapenyuntingan, penyuntingan, dan pascapenyuntingan. Tahap prapenyuntingan (Bab 5) dilakukan sebelum menyunting naskah untuk memperhatikan, antara lain, kelengkapan naskah, daftar isi, informasi mengenai penulis, ilustrasi, tabel, gambar, dan pembacaan sepintas. Tahap penyuntingan (Bab 6) merupakan pekerjaan utama penyunting yang memeriksa delapan hal, yaitu ejaan, tata bahasa, fakta, legalitas, konsistensi, gaya penulis, konvensi penyuntingan, dan gaya penerbit/selingkung. Tahap pascapenyuntingan (Bab 7) merupakan pemeriksaan menyeluruh setelah pekerjaan penyuntingan selesai dan sebelum naskah diserahkan kepada bagian produksi.
Bagian terakhir buku ini membahas tiga hal tambahan, yaitu keterampilan menulis bagi penyunting, ragam naskah, dan beberapa kiat. Penyunting memerlukan keterampilan menulis (Bab 8) untuk membuat, misalnya, surat kepada penulis, biografi penulis, dan ringkasan buku (sinopsis). Karena menangani berbagai jenis tulisan, penyunting juga perlu mengetahui berbagai ragam naskah (Bab 9). Terakhir, penulis mencantumkan beberapa kiat yang bermanfaat pagi penyunting (Bab 10).
