Morfem adalah satuan bahasa terkecil yang memiliki makna. Kridalaksana dalam Kamus Linguistik menambahkan bahwa makna morfem tidak dapat dibagi lagi menjadi sesuatu yang lebih kecil. Cara termudah untuk mengidentifikasi sebuah morfem adalah dengan membandingkan bentuk tersebut (morfem) dengan bentuk-bentuk lain.
Ada contoh yang menarik dari Abdul Chaer. Beliau mengidentifikasi morfem melalui kata kedua, ketiga, kelima, kesembilan, dan kesebelas. Chaer menuliskan bahwa apabila sebuah bentuk bisa berdampingan dengan bermacam-macam bentuk lainnya, berarti ia adalah morfem. Pada contoh tersebut, ke– hadir secara terus-menerus dan mengartikan hal yang serupa, yakni tingkat atau derajat. Ke- juga tidak bisa dipecah lagi ke dalam bentuk yang lebih kecil. Maka dari itu, ke- merupakan morfem.
Sementara itu, kita sama-sama tahu bahwa ke dapat pula berdiri sebagai preposisi yang ditulis terpisah dari bentuk lain. Contohnya adalah ke pasar, ke belakang, dan ke sekolah. Pada tiga frasa tersebut, ke sama-sama menunjukkan arah, tempat, dan tujuan. Ke dalam tiga contoh itu pun tidak dapat dipecah lagi menjadi sesuatu yang lebih kecil. Berarti, ke sebagai preposisi juga merupakan morfem.
Apakah ke- dan ke merupakan morfem yang sama? Jawabannya: tidak. Karena memiliki makna gramatikal yang berbeda, ke- dan ke adalah morfem yang berbeda pula.
Alomorf
Perlu diketahui lebih lanjut bahwa sebuah morfem bisa memiliki variasi. Anggota-anggota suatu morfem ini disebut alomorf. Dalam bahasa Indonesia, me- merupakan morfem yang memiliki enam alomorf, yaitu me- itu sendiri, men-, meny-, mem-, meng-, dan menge-. Penggunaan kelima alomorf pertama harus disesuaikan dengan fonem yang mengikutinya. Perhatikan tabel berikut.

Pada alomorf meny-, fonem konsonan /s/ mengalami peluluhan sehingga sikat menjadi menyikat. Hal ini juga terjadi pada fonem konsonan /k/ ketika bertemu dengan alomorf meng- sehingga kait beralih mengaitkan.
Alomorf yang terakhir, menge-, tidak saya sertakan dalam tabel karena alomorf tersebut tidak bergantung pada fonem yang mengikutinya. Menge- digunakan ketika kita bertemu dengan bentuk dasar yang hanya memiliki satu suku kata (ekasuku), seperti mengebom, mengecat, dan mengetik.
Sebetulnya, terdapat tiga pandangan yang berbeda mengenai alomorf, khususnya dalam kasus me-. Ada kalangan yang mengatakan bahwa me- hanyalah alomorf dari morfem men-. Ada pula yang menyebut bahwa morfem dari alomorf-alomorf di atas adalah meng-. Pada artikel ilmiah berjudul “Awalan Me-/Men-/Meng- + S- atau Meng-?” (Kentjono, 2017), me- dinyatakan sebagai morfem oleh linguis tradisional. Para penyusun Tata Bahasa Baku Bahasa Indonesia memilih meng- sebagai morfem. Sebaliknya, men- dipilih sebagai morfem oleh para linguis di jenjang perguruan tinggi.
Perbedaan pendapat mengenai morfem dan alomorf membuktikan bahwa penelitian pada bidang morfologi masih terus berjalan. Penting bagi kita untuk terus mengikutinya sebab “morfem merupakan bahan dasar pembentukan kata” (Kentjono, 2017). Berkat proses morfologis atau morfemis, sebuah kata dapat mengalami afiksasi, reduplikasi, dan komposisi yang kemudian membentuk kalimat, paragraf, dan wacana.
